life as a house

George passes away shortly after, but Sam and his family and friends finish building the house. George, with a time limit on his life, decides to demolish the shack left to him by his father and build his own custom house. He enlists his son, Sam, who is alienated from his stepfather Peter and his mother Robin, who has since been remarried to a wealthy investor. Sam is forced to spend his summer with George, who has not revealed his terminal condition, and help him with the house. Initially, Sam makes it a point not to help George demo the old house.

Work Ethic of Architects

Los Angeles profoundly shaped the modernist movement, but the City of Angels holds far more than its historic legacy. From Pierre Koenig’s iconic Stahl house to the Eames House and the transformation of the Los Angeles Basin, the city has continuously sought a new aesthetic, one where progressive forms and spatial multiplicity coexist. Reacting against old styles and outdated approaches, architects have constantly reimagined the city’s built environment through experimentation and reinterpretation. Thank goodness there are actors capable of delivering performances better than the scripts they're given. A manipulative tearjerker, Life as a House benefits from fine performances from the cast.

This movie is featured in the following articles.

Sam appears to be rebellious which is evident by his attitude toward his family, school, and dress. He has blue hair, wears heavy dark eye makeup, and has a variety of piercings on his face. He smokes cigarettes in the school parking lot, despite only being 16 years of age. Sam also exhibits signs of depression such as social isolation, anhedonia, fatigue, and suicidal ideation. Sam even attempts prostitution most likely due to his self-loathing and feeling of worthlessness.

George describes his father as a terrible drunk who one night drove while intoxicated and killed his mother and another woman, in addition to crippling a little girl in the back seat of the other car. George expresses guilt for not killing his father which may have prevented the accident. George confesses to Sam that he has been taking those pain medications for cancer, and he does not have much longer to live.

Robin seeks comfort from George and then learns he has terminal cancer. George has not told anybody of his illness up to this point but decides to tell Sam as well. Sam did not handle the news of his father’s impending death well.

While George is tearing down his father’s old house, he explains the relationship he had with his father to Sam. George’s father was an abusive alcoholic who killed George’s mom in a drunk driving accident. Sam points out that George’s attempt to tear down the house is actually an attempt to tear down his father.

Robin goes to the house and tells Sam about his father's death. Sam gives the property to a woman who has been living in a trailer park. As a girl, she was injured in a car crash caused by his grandfather. The move signals that discussions regarding increasing military pay and support services will be at the center of the committee’s upcoming work on the must-pass authorization legislation. Some of the plot lines never get resolved -- they just stop (or, in one case, just fall off the roof). The solution to the problem with the neighbor is unintentionally unnerving.

That Sam and Alyssa will become friends, and a little more. And that two unassigned characters of opposite genders are required by the laws of screenwriting to get together, even if one is a teenage pimp and the other a yuppie housewife. George's shack sits in a cul-de-sac high on a cliff overlooking the Pacific, in Orange County, Calif. Owners of ocean frontage in that area will be interested to learn that with 26 weeks of severance pay as a model-maker, George can afford to tear down his house and build another one. The White House has already proposed a 4.5% pay raise for all troops in 2025 as part of their federal budget request for fiscal 2025. That idea appears to have bipartisan support in both chambers.

Walker Workshop designed the Oak Pass Main House as an “upside down” program with public spaces above living quarters. Expertly integrated into the surrounding landscape, the elegant design was carefully built around a 75-foot swimming pool and large oak trees. With George still unable to leave the hospital and continue his work, Sam decides to hang Christmas lights from the house.

But there is a lot that is right with the movie, too, including subtle, magnetic performances and moments of real power and feeling. If the movie is not as dazzling as the finished house, at least it is not as decrepit as the shack. Since Taylor Swift released The Tortured Poets Department, fans have turned one line in her song “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me? Social media has been full of people quoting the line “You wouldn’t last an hour in the asylum where they raised me,” and now, Monica Lewinsky has joined in on the trend.

What is remarkable is how Kline and Thomas, in particular, are able to deepen their characters by sheer skill and depth of technique, so that we like them and care what happens to them. (Whether it is George and Robin we like, or Kline and Thomas, is beside the point--the characters and actors amount to the same thing.) Some episodes in the movie seem especially contrived. One involves a character who discovers something astonishing and falls off the roof.

Robin (Kristin Scott Thomas), his ex-wife, now trapped in a loveless marriage with the absent-minded Peter (Jamey Sheridan). Sam (Hayden Christensen), George and Robin's angst-ridden, pierced, drug-using and self-loathing son. Coleen (Mary Steenburgen), the next-door neighbor, and her daughter Alyssa (Jena Malone).

His plans to halt the project are stopped by Sam, who recognizes him from his prostitution attempt and blackmails him. “I’m going to keep fighting to make sure we support military families in this year’s NDAA, including fixing unacceptable child care shortfalls and making sure our troops have the quality, affordable housing they deserve,” she said. He is a self-proclaimed drug addict who has been using since he was twelve years old. He smokes cigarettes and marijuana, takes prescription medications, and huffs chemicals. His self-destructive behavior is likely due to depression and strained familial relationships.

He visits with George in the hospital and brings his bed to the window. Robin stays by George’s side until the time of his death. Sam decides to give the house to the now-grown woman who was injured and lost her mother in the drunk driving accident caused by George’s father.

It gets distracting when some scenes in a movie exist on a different plane of possibility than the others.

George tells Sam, who feels betrayed and accuses George of being selfish and takes refuge at Alyssa's house. George collapses and is found by Robin the following morning. Complications arise when neighbor David Dokos tries to halt construction because the building's height exceeds the allowable limit by six inches.
